Greenhalf Self Drive opened its doors to the public in
1934, by Ernie Greenhalf. It was one of the first daily rental
companies in Southern England. Ernie had previously served an
apprenticeship at Hollingsworths as a coach builder. The fleet
originally comprised of Austin 7's and Ford 8's, which were hired out to the
public from premises in Devonshire Place and Havelock Road.
After the war, the whole business was consolidated at premises in Caves
Road, before finally moving to its current location at Market Street, Grand
Parade in 1956.
In 1957 Ernie was joined in partnership by his son, John. Ernie
continued to work regularly until he passed away in 1986.
In 1989 John was in turn joined in partnership by his son Guy. They
are currently ably assisted by Pat Coleman, who has been the service manager
since 1988.
Over the years the fleet has changed a bit, but the commitment to personal
service remains the same!
